And if you're copy-pasting what you saw someone else do? My guess is that'll tip you toward the left end of the scale. No shame if it is... We're all doing what we can with the resources we have. Mediocrity is just math, and I want you to be mentally prepared for it. 🤷🏽‍♀️ If you're a recovering straight-A student like me, and the thought of a B- gives you hives, your mind might have gone straight into strategizing. "What tips your workshop into excellence?" (I'd love your thoughts below. I'll go first.) 🌍 Having a clear dream for your workshop, aligned with YOUR goals, values, and quirks. 🌍 Designing your workshop with that dream (and your workshop guests!) in mind. 🌍 Doing that workshop with your full presence, and an openness to receiving feedback (from yourself and others). 🌍 Iterating over and over (and over!) to learn from, build on, and improve your experiences. (If you thought I'd give you some quick-fix, silver bullet... "What’s the Dreamworld Codex?" - very logical question, btw! It’s my favourite tool for designing workshops that feel layered, nuanced, and transformative. The kind of workshops where people don’t just learn—they have an experience that sticks with them. I guide my clients through filling this out, but I'm not about gatekeeping - you can make your own version of this without me: At its heart are The 8 Elements of Worldbuilding, inspired by the stories, games, and worlds we lose ourselves in: ✨ Religion: What values or rituals shape your participants’ journey? ✨ History: What’s the story that brought us to where we are—and why does it matter now? ✨ Life Forms: Who’s in the room? Who/what else influences the work? ✨ Society & Culture: What norms or dynamics will you disrupt or create? ✨ Politics & Power: How will participants be empowered—and what power dynamics will they challenge? ✨ Magic & Technology: What tools, surprises, or techniques make the experience unforgettable? ✨ Language: What words, phrases, concepts, or symbols help participants share and carry this world with them? ✨ Environment: How does the space (physical or digital) transport and inspire them? Here’s how you can use this: 1️⃣Find a space that helps you feel dreamy. Somewhere expansive and open. 2️⃣ Grab a piece of paper and markers (or your favourite notes app) and make 8 sections - one for each Element of your workshop's world. 3️⃣ Ask yourself big questions for each Element: What feels exciting? What’s missing? What do you already know you want to invite people into? 4️⃣ Fill it in—messy is good! Your first draft is just the start of the magic.✨ 5️⃣ Take breaks liberally - don't try to force 'imagination'! You'll continue to come back to it over time. Workshops aren’t neutral. They either challenge oppressive systems or reinforce them. But I believe workshops can be a portal into... something different. Better. A moment to feel what is possible. Using worldbuilding and games, we can build playful, collective spaces where: ✨ Everyone has a 💩 tonne of agency. ✨ Ideas are shared, memories made. ✨ We model the future, not the past. Workshops are gateways into the world we're creating.
